Abstract

The "German standardization panel" (DNP) was set up in 2012 and is financed by the German Society for the Promotion of Research on Standardization (FNS). This series of annual surveys was conceived and is carried out by the TU Berlin's Chair of Innovation Economics. These surveys are performed to gain new knowledge for the purposes of standardization research, standardization practice, and for setting up suitable strategies. The goal is to obtain measurable results illustrating the benefits of standardization and to identify trends, for example for dealing with consortial standards or accelerating standards work. In 2012, the United Nations member states agreed on 17 goals for sustainable development on an economic, ecological and social level (so-called „Sustainable Development Goals“, SDGs). These are to be pursued over a period of 15 years from 2016 to 2030. These goals address global issues that are critically affected by practical implementations on company level. It therefore seems self-evident that (formal) standards play a central role in pursuing the Sustainable Development Goals. Do standards support companies in pursuing sustainable development goals? What role do standards already play, and where can standardization play an even greater role?
